The one rule of thumb upon bringing a newborn home when it comes to giving a bath is do not give a full on bath until the umbilical cord falls off. You want to keep it dry so it comes off as quickly as possible.
After about 3.5 weeks Mark's umbilical cord came off. That same night we gave him his first full bath. I think Dustin and I had more fun than little man. He seemed a bit confused about the whole thing. Now that we are 4 bath times in, we are starting to get the hang of it!
Before you get all gung-ho like we did the first time, be sure you have all the essentials handy. Why? There is nothing worse than scrambling around with a naked - yet clean - baby trying to get a towel that is actually big enough for baby. Below are our essentials (so far).
Now that you know what our bath time basics are, let me give you a few ground rules. Yes, these are no-brainers, but I still want to cover them, just to be safe.
Never leave the baby unattended! We don't even fill the little bath tub up half way, but if little man slouched over his face could easily go under the little bit of water we have. One of us is not only standing by giving him a bath, but we also make sure to always have a hand on him.
Test the water. I repeat...TEST.the.WATER. I always test first with my hand, then my wrist. Your wrist is more sensitive and can better gauge the water. Also, don't leave the water running in the bath tub or sink, wherever you are giving a bath. The water can change without you knowing and that could be bad if it got too hot or too cold.
We have a few other bath accessories, but we haven't needed or used them yet. If we do, we will let you know how it goes.
I'd say after our 4 baths, Mark is getting used to them. At first he was confused, and I think he still is for the first few minutes of being in a bath, but then he adjusts quite well. He also is not opposed to pouring water over his head to rinse the shampoo. He's a trooper with water trickling over his face. He hasn't let out any cries, which is great. Hopefully he will continue to enjoy bath time, because it is one of our favorite things to do with him!
What are your bath time essentials?
Hi there! I'm Kara, of taking KARA myself! I've dabbled in blogging off and on for a while now. Mostly off. But I'm trying to change that and make a dent in this side of the world wide web. Enjoy!
