One of the purposes of muscle Monday is for me to learn the muscles of my body. Health and fitness has become such a huge part of my life, so it's only right that I study and learn it like I should. Every fourth workout of the week is deltoid day, and it is one of my favorite days!
I have grown to be quite fond of my different lateral raises. And, I can't wait for the day that I work my way past the 2.5 and 5 pound weights! I used to be embarrassed by only being able to use the 2.5 pound weights for my rear delt flys...but then I reminded myself that we all start somewhere. I cannot compare myself to someone who has been lifting weights for years. I will get to there. And, that is why I do not mind blogging about where I am at in my fitness journey. One of these days I will become better, and my will it be nice to look back and remember when I used to use the 2.5 pound weight for my rear delt flys.
"The deltoid muscle is a rounded, triangular muscle located on the uppermost part of the arm and the top of the shoulder. it is named after the Greek letter delta, which is shaped like an equilateral triangle. The deltoid is attached by tendons to the skeleton at the clavicle (collarbone), scapula (shoulder blade), and humerus (upper arm bone)." [Source: Inner Body]
Everyone starts somewhere when it comes to their fitness levels. No one was born with muscles, a complete knowledge of the gym and more than just the "basics" of fitness. EVERYONE was a beginner! Remember that when you get started. Don't assume that a week after you start weightlifting that you should be able to bench press as much as Joe Schmo who has been lifting for 5 years!
Because there isn't this inherent knowledge of what to do at the gym; it's good to consult someone. In today's day and age of social media, it is extremely easy to "find" someone to help expand your knowledge of fitness. In my case, it came in the form of Jenna Fail on Instagram.
I was an avid follower of hers last summer (2015). Finally, I got the guts to reach out to her, followed by joining her team (#TeamFail).
Best. Decision. EVER!
When I was in second grade, I got an apron, a tray and a little notepad for my birthday. I was SO ecstatic. I could finally take drink orders on my notepad while my grandparents were in town. Then I could wear my cute apron and use my tray to deliver the drinks. While you are probably imagining cute little seven year old Kara, which I was obviously! The story doesn't have a happy ending. On my first delivery of drinks, I spilled them everywhere and then proceeded to run in my room and cry out of embarrassment.
The point I am trying to get across is this - I have always loved taking notes. In my cubicle at work I have about 13 miscellaneous notebooks ready to use at any time. I can't even tell you how many I have at home. It's an obsession really, and one that I do not want to go away.
In keeping with my love of taking notes, I have always used a workout log. I created my first log in excel and haven't looked back. I've tried to just use a sheet of paper, or even one of my many notebooks, but it is so difficult for me to compare my last workout. A coworker then told me about an app that they used. I downloaded it, tested it out and promptly deleted it. My trusty workout log is where it is at!
A few weeks ago a representative from PinkBlush Maternity contacted me via direct message on Instagram inquiring if I would be interested in doing a collaboration with them. What does this collaboration entail? If I agreed, they would send me a piece from their maternity collection, that I would be able to select from a list of options. I then write a blog post (which I am doing now), and share on my social media. Then voila, it's done! Easy, right? So naturally I said yes. Especially since I am a frequent online window shopper of PinkBlush and am excited to finally own something from them!
After sharing the list of clothing options to choose from with my husband, we both decided that I should select a dress that is nothing like what I own. So I went with the yellow floral fitted maternity dress.
Based off of their size guide listed underneath the dress description and options, I went with a large. Throughout my maternity clothing purchases, I have been pretty true to my pre-pregnancy sizing. It took no more than 3 days for the dress to be shipped and delivered to me, which was really nice.
I was very pleased when I got the dress; however, I almost should've gone with a size up, only because this is a fitted dress which would've left me much more room to grow in my last weeks of pregnancy. So, you will see in the below pictures that it is a little snug. But, dear husband loves the dress, again, because it is like nothing I own, so I will continue to wear it!
I love Instagram. It is by far my favorite social media platform. I mainly use Facebook to keep in touch with family (I deleted almost 1800 "friends/acquaintances" not too long ago) and news. Husband and I follow several news pages and often refer to them in conversation. Then I just recently completely deleted my Twitter, LinkedIn and MySpace. MySpace for obvious reasons. I mean, who uses it anymore? LinkedIn because I was tired of former coworkers stalking my page. And Twitter because I never used it. I tried my hand at SnapChat for all of 5 minutes. Didn't like it, so I promptly deleted it.
But Instagram I use daily. It is where I met my coach-turned-friend Jenna Fail. She alone has been life changing since she has been the a main point of my motivation in working out the past year. If you are on Instagram and want a daily dose of motivation and wit, then follow her now. Here's her Instagram page.
Not too long ago I read a post by someone, and I apologize but I cannot think of who it was, that was talking about how they kickstarted accomplishing their weight loss goals. This person has a couple hundred pounds to lose and is documenting their journey on social media. But, instead of setting super unrealistic goals, you know the kind I'm talking about, the ones where you feel defeated before you even begin working on them? She set her sights on smaller goals at first.
How many of you fitness newbies go to the gym and often wonder "what muscle is this exercise working?" I will gladly admit I have done that on more than one occasion. For instance, I will come home and ask my husband, "Is this where my delt is? Because this is what's hurting!" It's always a good sign when I feel it in the "right" muscle that I just worked. HA!
I wanted to introduce Muscle Monday for all the newcomers to fitness that want to learn where each muscle is and what some good exercises are for those muscles. Also, I need this for myself more than anything! I want to get into fitness more, and in doing so, I want to learn where all my muscles are! So, join along with me in learning some of the muscles that make up our body!
This week - the BICEPS!
Hi there! I'm Kara, of taking KARA myself! I've dabbled in blogging off and on for a while now. Mostly off. But I'm trying to change that and make a dent in this side of the world wide web. Enjoy!
